– COVID-19 and its impact on the legal system: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges and changes in the legal system, such as court closures, delays, remote hearings, online filings, and more. While courts have worked hard to make up for the backlog from COVID-19 closures, to this day, many defendants’ cases are still subject to this backlog.
– New laws effective January 1, 2024:  Various bills became law at the beginning of 2024, including the ban of sale of certain e-cigarette containers as well as diversion strategies and procedures for children accused of certain fine-only offenses in municipal or justice courts related to criminal matters.
